Rumeli Türküsü is a term referring to the light urban style Turkish folk music from Thrace (türkü means Turkish folk song). Songs of this genre are composed within the scales and melodic progression of the classical makam system. Since the 17th century, some of the most distinguished composers of Ottoman classical tradition have written light tunes in the form of türkü, forming a bridge between the élite and popular taste. I incorporated two original Rumeli Türküsü (Gidem Dedim Yârenlerim Darildi and Bulut Gelir Seher ile) into this piece, which was written for my dear friend, wonderful musician and Indian bansuri virtuoso, Deepak Ram. The accompanying flute/violin percussion between mm. 194-217 is optional. This section may only be played on the guitar without flute/violin part. Many thanks to Kathleen Purcell, Greer Ellison, and Cihat Askin for their valuable suggestions on the flute and violin parts.
